The Challenge
Customer platform is currently utilized by over 250 Fortune 500 companies. The current solution is being operated across multiple data centres in the US and UK regions, with most of the hardware reaching its end-of-life stage in early 2023. This has motivated Customer to embark on a cloud journey, a strategic initiative to migrate its on-premises infrastructure to Microsoft Azure. This migration aims to enhance scalability, agility, and cost-effectiveness while ensuring the security and reliability of their IT operations for client facing application.
The customer’s requirement
• Migrate 2000+ VMs with 2 PB storage that include MS SQL cluster instances, databases, and related configurations currently hosted on the on-premises clusters with minimal downtime.
• Migrate all application services, middleware, and components associated with the SQL databases. This includes web applications, APIs, and any other Applications relying on SQL data.
• Migration to be automated to speedup the migration process.
• Migration of 500 MS-SQL instances spread across 60 SQL FCI clusters with 500 TB of data.
Delivery
• Automating infrastructure creation using Terraform
• Our proprietary code generator tool to auto generate Terraform and PowerShell scripts by injecting data from CSV files into text templates. This reduced the complexity of writing and testing the code
• Installed and Configured Microsoft SQL cluster through PowerShell automation.
• Automated the migration process like cloning the existing VM disk and deploying multiple VMs
