Cloud Governance & Cost Optimization

FinOps & Cost Governance

Cloud economics work differently from on-premises. Costs are variable, real-time, and generated by every team across the organisation — not just the infrastructure team placing hardware orders. Without deliberate governance, cloud spend grows faster than the business value it creates.

FinOps is the discipline that brings financial accountability to cloud operations. We implement it across your entire AWS estate — from the policy layer down to per-team visibility and charge-back.

What We Do

Cost Policy Design

Every cost governance programme starts with clear policies. We work with your engineering, finance, and executive stakeholders to define cost policies aligned to your organisational requirements — what spending is approved, what requires escalation, and what triggers an automatic response. These policies are not documents that sit in a folder; they are enforced through account structures, IAM boundaries, and AWS Service Control Policies.

Account Structure and Tagging

How you structure your AWS accounts determines how accurately you can attribute costs. We design an account hierarchy that separates workloads, teams, and environments in a way that makes cost reporting accurate by default. A mandatory tagging strategy — enforced through AWS Config rules — ensures that every resource carries the metadata needed for charge-back, show back, and anomaly analysis. Untagged resources are flagged automatically.

Budget Alerts and Spend Visibility

We configure AWS Budgets and Cost Explorer to give every team and stakeholder the visibility they need. Threshold alerts fire before budgets are breached, not after. Cost anomaly detection identifies unusual spending patterns early. Monthly reports translate raw spend data into business-meaningful summaries that finance teams can act on.

Reserved Instance and Savings Plan Optimisation

On-demand pricing is the most expensive way to run steady-state workloads. We analyse your usage patterns and make evidence-based recommendations for Reserved Instance purchases and Savings Plan commitments — balancing coverage, flexibility, and commitment term to maximise savings without locking you into the wrong configuration. Recommendations are reviewed quarterly as your usage evolves.

Project Lifecycle Tracking

Cloud costs often outlive the projects that created them. We implement project lifecycle tracking so that resources are tagged to their originating initiative, cost owners are notified when projects enter maintenance or wind-down phases, and decommissioning is systematic rather than forgotten. This alone eliminates a significant proportion of the waste in most AWS estates.

Why It Matters

The AWS Well-Architected Cost Optimization Pillar is clear: managing cloud costs requires managing usage through governance, not just optimising individual services. Without the governance layer, technical optimisations deliver one-time savings. With it, cost efficiency compounds over time.
